Call For Entries: 2007 FPA Student Flexible Packaging Design Challenge
The Flexible Packaging Association’s Student Flexible Packaging Design Challenge is a great opportunity for students currently enrolled in a packaging, design, food science, engineering or related discipline to develop a flexible packaging solution that helps to address a packaging issue and advance flexible packaging.
In only its third year, the Student Flexible Packaging Design Challenge has received strong industry support and participation from the students. Since 2005, 77 concept outlines, detailing innovative flexible packaging ideas, have been submitted into the competition. Of the 77 concept outlines entered, 16 have advanced to the prototype/bench sample development round of the Student Flexible Packaging Design Challenge.
First place winning entries of past competitions include a flexible shoe box and an aseptic milk pouch for children. Second place winning entries have included a single serving flexible package for razor blades and a bread “loaf” with individually packages slices of bread. A third place price has been awarded for the development of a flexible portable inhaler.
The Challenge is for students to develop a flexible packaging solution that improves an existing flexible package, converts another packaging structure to a flexible package, or packages a new or existing product that is not currently available within a flexible package.
Students must submit their concept outlines detailing their design idea prior to the actual development of their flexible packaging prototype/bench sample. Students are encouraged to work with their schools in the development of the flexible package concept outline and prototype/bench sample. FPA converter members will also be available as mentors during the prototype/bench sample development process.
Concept outlines submitted into the Challenge will be evaluated by a panel of industry experts from various facets of the packaging industry, including academics, technical and marketing experts. The concept outline entry deadline is October 12, 2006. The submission deadline for the flexible packaging prototype/bench sample is December 4, 2006. Winners will be announced February 28, 2007 at the Welcome and Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Dinner, which will be held in conjunction with the 2007 FPA Annual Meeting in Aventura, Florida.
The student or team that develops the first place winning entry will receive $1,000 and an expense paid trip to the 2007 FPA Annual Meeting. The student or team developing the second place entry will receive $500.
