The FPA Examination of Globalization
By Peter Schottland, CEO and President of American Packaging Corporation
Chairman of FPA Board of Directors

Globalization is a hot-button issue within the flexible packaging industry. From converters to equipment and material suppliers, the impact of the “global marketplace” is significant and continues to grow. The FPA Board of Directors recognizes the importance of understanding the realities and the impact of globalization on the flexible packaging industry, and announced that the Flexible Packaging Association would conduct research on the issue.

I am pleased to report that the globalization market research project is fully underway. The association has commissioned Packaging and Technology Integrated Solutions, LLC and Pira International to examine the Impact of Globalization on the U.S. Flexible Packaging Industry.

Michael Richmond, PhD of PTIS, along with Graham Cox of Pira International, will present the results of the market research at the 2006 FPA Fall Executive Conference being held on October 4, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois.

This in-depth market research will equip flexible packaging manufacturers with the tools needed to excel within the global market place. Several aspects of globalization are examined including competition within the global marketplace, opportunities for growth, innovation in the U.S. versus the rest of the world, materials and equipment, global sourcing strategies of major consumer product companies and how global packaging regulations differ from country to country.

GLOBALIZATION MARKET RESEARCH
The globalization market research will identify new business models for competing globally and detail how flexible packaging converters and suppliers can develop new customer opportunities.

Research results will reveal several regions where growth opportunities exist for U.S. flexible packaging converters, and strategies for developing new business within these regions.

The research will also detail how innovation in the U.S. compares with flexible packaging advancements within Europe, Asia and other regions. Market research results will also provide recommendations for enhancing the protection of proprietary information and intellectual property.

Topline and directional data will detail the flow of raw materials, and how raw material prices and availability differ throughout various regions. Pricing and equipment purchases today and potential future scenarios are also examined.

Global sourcing strategies of major consumer product companies are identified, in addition to sourcing strategies for small, medium and large converters across major brand owner categories.

FPA’s globalization market research also examines how packaging regulations differ from country to country, and existing pressures for “sustainable packaging.”

2006 FALL EXECUTIVE CONFERENCE: IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON THE U.S. FLEXIBLE PACKAGING INDUSTRY
The 2006 FPA Fall Executive Conference agenda also includes presentations from global marketing consultant John Caslione who will provide an outlook on the new global economy and global business development; Howard Rappaport will update attendees on the global polyolefins market; Neil Rogers of Procter & Gamble will share the company’s development needs and expectations within flexible packaging; and Amit Sheth of Environmental Packaging International will detail the international drivers behind international and domestic environmental packaging mandates.

The association also thanks FPA members FlintGroup, Huntsman, Pliant and Polymer Packaging Inc. for their support and enhancing the Fall Executive Conference through their generous sponsorships.
