FPA President and CEO recently spoke at SPE’s FlexPackCon 2017. Alison was a plenary speaker, and presented industry data, current trends and drivers, and issues and concerns within the flexible packaging industry. The conference was a joint event of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and the Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters, and Laminators (AIMCAL). A series of parallel tracks addressed extrusion, coating, lamination, metallization, converting, and the performance requirements driving design for flexible packaging. The sustainability session began with an overview of PepsiCo's "Performance with Purpose" sustainability strategy. Presentations also addressed packaging in a circular economy and new sustainable adhesives and coatings. Other session topics included "business trends and drivers", from mergers and acquisitions to enabling new extrusion and converting technologies; how to take advantage of massive quantities of data to improve quality and efficiency; new materials and the benefits they bring including new barrier substrates, new adhesive technologies, and the inclusion of unusual materials like polyketones; requirements for e-commerce and home-delivered meals; and new multi-layer structures and abrasion resistance.
