The Flexible Packaging Association promotes a general financial and economic understanding of the flexible packaging industry by gathering, analyzing and disseminating industry and economic information that monitors the health and performance of key industry attributes. Reports resulting from these efforts include:
- State of the Flexible Packaging Industry Report (SOI)
The FPA State of the Flexible Packaging Industry Report (SOI) is published annually and is considered by many to be a definitive source of information for anyone involved in the converting, supplying, purchasing, tracking, reporting on or investing in the flexible packaging industry. The content of the SOI to provide a comprehensive view of the total U.S. packaging and flexible packaging segment of the industry: data on industry growth, mergers and acquisitions, the U.S. and global flexible packaging industries, imports and exports, issues and drivers of flexible packaging and key expense information. In addition, the SOI provides a breakdown of the flexible packaging industry by major end-use segment including retail food and non-food, institutional food and non-food, industrial applications. Medical and pharmaceuticals, and consumer products. Over the last few years, FPA has also conducted a non-member outreach survey to gather meaningful data from non-members in the industry to add additional insight and perspective. Beyond the member and non-member survey information, FPA also utilizes U.S. Census Bureau, Foreign Trade Division, Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Departments of Labor and Commerce, industry analysts, investment banking reports and other authoritative sources to provide a more complete and insightful picture of the flexible packaging industry.
- Pulse of the Industry Reports
The Flexible Packaging Association conducts a series of quarterly surveys to gather data and report back to FPA members regarding performance against several key industry attributes including sales revenue, volume, inventory, capital expenditures, profitability and utilization. The data collected covers performance levels for the latest quarter versus the previous quarter and the same quarter of the previous year. In addition, information is gathered concerning members’ outlook for sales and volume for the next quarter versus the current quarter. The reports are disseminated to FPA converter and supplier members.
In addition, the Flexible Packaging Association conducts a Financial Benchmarking Survey Program which requires converter members complete and return the requisite surveys to receive the final report information. This program includes the Earnings Survey/Reports which are conducted twice per year, mid-year and year-end and the Operating Cost/Ratios Survey/Report which is conducted on an annual basis.
- Earnings Reports
The Earnings Reports include financial expense and manufacturing cost information with key areas including materials, direct labor, sales, marketing, administrative, research and development, other manufacturing costs, and where applicable data on corporate allocations and interest expenses. This report is available only to FPA converter members who participate by returning completed surveys and provides a wealth of key expense data for members to use for financial benchmarking purposes. - Operating Cost/Ratios Report
The Operating Cost/Ratio Report is done on an annual basis and includes detailed profit/loss breakdowns of key financial expenses and manufacturing cost information. There is detailed expense information for total cost of production with for example direct and indirect labor, repairs and maintenance labor, factory administrative, clerical and supervision. benefit cost, depreciation and amortization, operating and repair and maintenance supplies, and utilities, and direct material used. There is also detailed expense cost detail for sales, marketing, administrative, and research and development categories plus where applicable data on corporate allocations, other expense (income), extraordinary expense (income), and interest expense. Composite data is also broken down by company size and primary manufacturing operation to facilitate like comparisons. This report is available only to FPA converter members who participate by returning completed surveys and provides a wealth of key expense data for members to use for financial benchmarking purposes.
