Canada Imposes Tariffs on US Molds, Plastic Products

Canadian manufacturers will face higher costs for essential production equipment and plastic goods as the federal government announced Tuesday that retaliatory tariffs targeting US molds and plastic products will take effect September 8, 2026. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will implement dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on approximately $20 billion worth of US goods. This move comes after President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, following the collapse of trade negotiations. Canada's Department of Finance stated that despite intensive negotiations conducted in good faith with the United States to reach a fair and comprehensive trade agreement, the proposed terms ultimately failed to serve Canadian interests. The department characterized the US position as demanding excessive concessions from Canada while providing insufficient benefits in return.
