FPA views SMM as a systemic approach to using and reusing materials more productively over their entire life cycles—from extraction of raw materials, through design, manufacturing, use, and eventual disposal or recovery. SMM includes the goals of reducing environmental and human health impacts, conserving natural resources, minimizing waste generation, and promoting economic benefit.
