Pilot Programs Test Recyclability of Flexible Films in California

General News, Sustainable Packaging,

Earlier this summer, the Flexible Film Recycling Alliance (FFRA) launched what it called the first-of-their-kind commercial recycling pilot programs in California. California has been implementing its extended producer responsibility (EPR) law that has been scheduled to fully launch in the new year. (Various entities have filed legal challenges over SB 54, which is the state’s Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act). Amid this, FFRA, which is a national organization dedicated to advancing the recovery and recycling of plastic film and flexible packaging, started the two recycling pilot programs. FFRA says the programs are designed to generate operational data on commercial film collection while informing future program development under California’s evolving recycling system. The programs also will identify approaches that can be replicated and scaled.
