Virginia Tech Researchers Develop Ring-Shaped Polymers for Sustainable Packaging

Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a novel approach to creating degradable, strong, flexible, oxygen-blocking packaging materials without altering the chemical components — instead rearranging the molecular architecture of polymer chains into rings with controlled sequences. The team of scientists changed the plastic's composition by organizing polymer chains into cyclic structures and controlling the sequence of molecules within each ring, creating what they call a "gradient" polymer. The findings, published recently in Nature Communications, suggest the approach could address the plastics industry's challenge of reducing environmental impact while maintaining performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
